Scorebook Theme: Jeter’s Iconic Flip Play — October 13, 2001
Some games deserve their own page in baseball history — and in any scorebook. The 2001 ALDS Game 3, forever known as “The Flip Game,” is one of them.
The Yankees trailed the series 0-2, facing elimination on the road in Oakland. In the bottom of the 7th, with New York clinging to a 1-0 lead, Jeremy Giambi of the A’s rounded third on a double down the right-field line. The relay throw from Shane Spencer sailed over two cutoff men, seemingly spelling disaster. But then came The Flip.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Derek Jeter sprinted across the diamond, fielded the off-line throw near the first base line, and with a backhanded shovel toss, flipped the ball to catcher Jorge Posada, who tagged Giambi at the plate. The heads-up, instinctual play stunned everyone — preserving the lead and shifting the momentum back to the Yankees. They would go on to win the game, the series, and eventually reach the World Series.
Rawlings Heart of the Hide Wingtip design baseball gloves blend time-tested craftsmanship with modern flair, creating a standout look and elite performance for serious players. The distinctive wingtip design—named for the curved, decorative lace pattern on the back of the glove—adds both style and structure. It not only enhances the glove’s visual appeal but also allows for a slightly different break-in and feel, especially in the back of the hand and fingers. Crafted from Rawlings’ world-renowned Heart of the Hide steerhide leather, these gloves offer top-tier durability, shape retention, and feel. The leather is cut from the top 5% of Rawlings' hides, ensuring a premium foundation for long-lasting play. Most models include deer-tanned cowhide lining for a soft, comfortable fit and padded thumb sleeves for added protection. The Wingtip series comes in a range of pro patterns—like the 200, 31, and NP families—each built for specific fielding needs, from quick transfers for infielders to deep pockets for outfielders. Many Wingtip gloves are released as limited runs or exclusives, with unique colorways, embossed stamping, and custom touches like printed leather backings or special themes.
